BLAIRGOWRIE’S NEW FIRE STATION
Blairgowrie’s new fire station
is to be officially opened by Bailie S. B. Edwards, a former firemaster and
local representative of the Perth and Kinross Joint Fire Committee on Friday,
May 2nd.
Provost Robert G. McLean of Blairgowrie will preside at the ceremony, which will
be attended by members of the committee under their chairman, Mr. A. D. C. Main,
Windyedge, Perth.
The new buildings situated at the junction of West George Street and Lochay
Street, accommodates two vehicles, one of them a new standard type water tender.
There is also a muster bay, and lecture, locker and drying rooms, as well as
showers and storage space. A yard behind the single storey building is to be
used for training purposes and for housing a tank for testing pumps.
The present unit consists of eleven part time firemen, under Station Officer
James McKenzie.
Bailie Edwards, who was firemaster for 27 years until his appointment to the
committee, will review the history of the brigade from 1921 to 1948.

Blairgowries New Fire Station Opened
Early fire fighting days in
Blairgowrie were recalled last night by Bailie S. B. Edwards, a former
firemaster for 27 years, when he officially opened the new station in the burgh.
“In 1921 when I was first asked to take charge of the fire brigade.”, he said,
“the only equipment we had was six lengths of leather hose, one standpipe and a
nozzle, and a barrow. Of course, we did not go out of the burgh to any fires.
When the alarm was raised the police telephoned my office and the town’s workmen
and myself pulled the barrow to wherever the fire was to the accompaniment of
cat calls and whistling from the younger generation.
“The auxiliary fire service came into being in 1939 and we were issued with a
motor lorry, a small trailer pump and a good supply of canvas hose. Then, on
completion of training, we received a motor car and major trailer pump.
A Dream Come True
“When the fire service was nationalised in 1941
appliances and equipment were steadily brought up to date. But we lacked proper
premises to house the machines, the fire station being for many years in part of
an old building belonging to the town Council in Upper John St.
“This station,” Bailie Edwards continued, “besides being quite unsuitable for
the accommodation of fire fighting vehicles, was inadequate for training
purposes, and during the years of my service I always had visions of a proper
station within the burgh. The only way that I I felt I could help in this matter
was to join the Town Council and to represent them on the County Council and the
Joint Fire Committee. When I look at this station I feel my dream has come true.
“In Blairgowrie,” he concluded, “ we have a modern fire station, equipment and a
first class crew of well trained men.”
Prior to the opening Provost Robert G. M’Lean, of Blairgowrie, accompanied by
the Fire Committee chairman, Mr. A. D. C. Main, Windyedge, Perth, and Bailie
Edwards inspected the men.
The new buildings situated at the junction of West George Street and Lochay
Street, accommodate two vehicles, one of them a new standard type water tender.

showers and storage space. There is a yard behind the single storey building for
