AUCHTERARDER FIRE STATION OPENED

Auchterarder’s New Fire Station
is Opened by County Convener

“Since their inception in 1947 the Perth and Kinross Joint Fire Committee have tackled very effectively the task of providing an efficient service in their area, for, in addition to the modernisation of equipment, they have erected six new fire stations, of which this is the latest,” said Sir George T. McGlashan, C.B.E., county convener, when he opened Auchterarder’s new fire station last night.
“The vital importance of the fire service in our country,” said Sir George, “is being realised today more than ever before. Last year the direct cost of fire damage in the United Kingdom was over £44 million. In the words of the New Testament :“How great a matter a little fire doth kindle.” But there are also the consequential losses – loss of life, stoppage of factory production, loss of employment, and so on – all of them serious, and some tragic.”

A Protective Shield

He continued :“Great credit must be given to the members of the Joint Fire Committee, under Mr. Main’s able chairmanship, and to Mr. Masson, as firemaster, for the progress already achieved in providing, in buildings and equipment, what one might call a protective fire shield in our joint counties. But I am sure they would readily admit that without the firemen, not only the full-time men but the part-time retained men, that shield would be of no use. It is essential to have men immediately available, and thoroughly equipped, when the call comes, for, in the words of Shakespeare : ‘ A little fire is quickly trodden out, which, being suffered, rivers cannot quench.’
“We have the equipment and we have a fine body of men well trained to handle that equipment in the interests of the community.”
Provost J. Paterson, Auchterarder, presided at the opening, and among those present were Mr. A. D. C. Main and Bailie W. H. Baxter, chairman and vice chairman respectively of the Perth and Kinross Joint Fire Committee, and Firemaster A. Masson.
The new station cost £8500. It is a brick built, one storey, two bay station, with watchroom, lecture room and storage accommodation.
