Opened Kirrie Fire Station by button
Kirriemuir’s new fire station was
opened yesterday afternoon by Mrs. J.W. Keith, Carnoustie, wife of Angus Fire
Area Committee chairman.
Ex-Provost Keith said it had taken practically five years to get a station
worthy of the service built in Kirriemuir. In five or six years it was hoped
Montrose would have one to match.
<PHOTO> On watch at the station, former Forfar Athletic left half, Eddie
Falconer, now sporting a moustache.
It has been easy to criticize that too much money had been spent on the
Kirriemuir station, but he did not think that had been the case. For certain
work the Fire Area Committee were entirely dependent on stations like Kirriemuir.
BAD ROADS
Few industrial firms were
likely in Kirriemuir, but there was a long bit of country around with
possibilities of agriculture fires. Roads were bad and many times there was no
water supply. The Kirriemuir firemen would get excellent training so that they
could maintain a high standard.
Introducing Mrs. Keith, Mr. J.D. Hardie, hon. treasurer of the committee, said
the first duty of a fire authority was the saving of life, and the second the
protection of property. All the fire brigades in the area were linked up for
that common purpose.
Pressing a button that operated the folding doors, Mrs. Keith declared the
station open.
Elizabeth Margaret Mudie, six year old daughter of one of the firemen, presented
Mrs. Keith with a bouquet.
DEMONSTRATION
Following a demonstration
of fire fighting, the company inspected the new station.
Premise include an appliance room with a 400 gallon water tender and trailer
pump; a towing vehicle with pump and fitted with radio; control room; hose room;
store; muster-room, with equipment for drying clothes; toilet with two baths and
two showers; recreation room; washing compartment for cleaning on return from
fires; and boiler room, with thermostatically controlled gas boiler. In addition
there is available space for drill.
Among those present at the opening were:- Mr. R.W.L. McCaig, county convener;
Provost Ross, Monifieth; Brigadier Lambert, Kirriemuir; Mr. Lyle (town clerk,
Dundee); Mr. Ian A. Macknight, Angus county clerk; Major Sherriff, Ascreavie;
Firemaster J.W. Gibson, and friends of local firemen.
