Denny was a one pump retained station until the seventies? when it was upgraded to a two pump retained station. Upgraded to 2 pumps early 1960s?
At the station in Glebe Street the drivers learned to drive without mirrors as they had to be folded in when the machines were put in the station as the entrances were so narrow, in fact when the mechanics came to service the machines they used to get a retained driver out to put the machines back in the station.
When Glebe Street was a one Pump station the building was part of the Denny and Dunipace Town Councils yard, the other bay was occupied by the dust cart and various council equipment was kept in the yard.
Station Officers were in charge of 2 pump retained stations until 1975 when the new Central Region Fire Brigade decided they didnt want Retained Station Officers and all new Officers in Charge had the rank of Sub Officer. Existing Station Officers retained the rank until they retired. Station Officer Trotten was the last Retained Station Officer.
My grandfather ,John
Buchanan, was Station Officer/Section Leader at Denny 1940 to 1944 then he
volunteered for NFS Overseas contingent and was stationed at Romford during the
V1/V2 rocket blitz then after D-Day he went to France, Luxembourg, Belgium and
Germany where they looked after fuel and ammunition dumps with American and
British forces.
After the war he was in charge of the fire station at Alloa then returned as
part time OiC of Denny and Carrongrove Mill Fire Brigade until about 1962 then
R. Totten took over.
Three of the Denny Brigade, W. Kippen, J. Turnbull and P. Mcginnes, were with
him overseas.
This information was supplied by my father Duncan Buchanan.
My grandfather died Jan 1966.
