Notes
Edinburgh Airport
is a Category 8 airfield. The airport has invested heavily in the training of
its 67 personnel through the introduction of CAP699 and its equipment including
the purchase of new fire appliances to achieve the requirements of CAP168.
They also take their commitment to the local community very seriously through
various work with local charities and groups as well as having the only fully
functioning Youth Firefighter Programme up and running at any UK airport.
Advanced communication systems
The airport fire station has appliance bays designed to take six fire
fighting appliances, and a control watch room fitted with advanced communication
systems. It is located adjacent to the main 06 24 runway and well situated for
emergency deployment of all fire appliances to reach all areas within the
airfield, in less than three minutes.
There is an office complex within the building as well as a stores room,
breathing apparatus maintenance room, crew room and catering facilities. 24 hour
manning of the fire station is achieved by four alternating watches, each
comprising 14 leading firefighters/ firefighters and two officers conducting a
12 hour tour of duty
The fire ground at Edinburgh has undergone modernisation and at this time
comprises a simulated 757 aircraft rig, designed to allow a range of differing
fire scenarios ranging from a nose wheel fire to a large scale internal fire
scenario.
At the east end of the fire station there is a ladder tower located for domestic
fire training and ladder handling.
